'Tulsa King' Showrunner Terence Winter Rehired for Season 2 Despite Taylor Sheridan Clash

'The Sopranos' writer had left after a successful Season 1 due to creative differences.

Terence Winter is back on board for "Tulsa King" Season 2.

Winter had been ousted from the Paramount+ mobster series due to creative differences with creator and executive producer Taylor Sheridan. The show follows a former mafia capo Dwight "The General" Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone). Manfredi is freed from prison after 25 years, only to be banished from the gang by his boss. So he flees to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he begins to build a new criminal empire from the ground up.

Although Winter has returned to the project, he will no longer be serving as showrunner. One would be quick to think of it as a demotion, though sources close to the project say this isn't the case (via The Hollywood Reporter). Instead, sources say, removing Winter from the position will allow him to focus solely on the writing. Winter, best known for his writing on the iconic HBO mafia series "The Sopranos," also has a close relationship with Stallone.

"He loves these characters and loved working with Sly and was glad his post-strike schedule allowed him to return to write but not run the show," the source says.

Sheridan is known for maintaining strong creative control over all of his series, which also include "Yellowstone," "Mayor of Kingstown," "Special Ops: Lioness" and the ever-growing stable of "Yellowstone" spinoff series such as "1883" and "1923." It was clearly in the best interest of all parties involved to reach a resolution and keep Winters involved. The first season of "Tulsa King" was a hit for streaming service Paramount+, becoming their second most-watched show behind "1923."

In addition to "The Sopranos," Winters has also lent his pen to a number of recent projects, including the tragicomedy "Midge," which is about the inventor of unleaded gasoline and Freon, Thomas Midgley, Jr.

Sources speculate that filming for "Tulsa King" Season 2 could wrap in November or December of 2024. The premiere could come between March or April of 2025.
