Attention country fans wanting to hear more Luke Bryan songs like "Build Me a Daddy" (and way less "Country Girl (Shake It For Me)"): Kevin Costner and his Yellowstone co-stars have Bryan thinking about the Western half of country & Western.
"I'm really into Yellowstone, and the music in Yellowstone, it's Texas music, cowboy music," Bryan says in an interview with the Chicago Tribune. "I'm obviously not a cowboy, but it makes me wonder how I could do a really retro-sounding cowboy song that isn't just drums, bass, guitar and steel guitar. Or when I listen to the Weeknd, that sounds like Duran Duran to me — totally an '80s synthesizer. I'm always wondering, 'What's a fun little sound people haven't heard me do?'"
The Paramount Network's Yellowstone stars Costner as John Dutton, Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton, Wes Bentley as Jamie Dutton, and Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler. The Western show follows the Dutton family in Montana, as they own the largest contiguous ranch in the United States. The show is centered around the Dutton ranch's fight to keep its borders intact come hell or high water as a Native American Indian Reservation, land developers, rival ranching families and Yellowstone National Park all try to encroach onto the land.

Bryan also explained how teenage years spent listening to '90s country and rap plus college town gigs inspired his contributions to the so-called "bro-country" that dominated Nashville in the 2010s.
"'I would go play college bars, honky-tonks — a thousand people dancing, partying their ass off, spraying beer," he says. "And the second I got offstage, the DJ would play the biggest hip-hop songs in the world, and everybody wearing cowboy hats and cowboy boots and Wranglers with dip rings, they were all out there grinding and humping one another. And nobody ever had a problem with it. So 'Country Girl (Shake It for Me)' kind of does all that. So does 'That's My Kind of Night.' It's almost like a touch of a hip-hop song with a guy with a real country voice singing it."
Beyond talk of his binge watching habits, the interview also covers lessons learned from the two time CMA Entertainer of the Year's gig alongside Katy Perry and Lionel Richie on ABC's American Idol, what his latest title track says about the small town experience and whether his farm tour is a safe option during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.
