10 Hanging Plants to Buy This Spring & Summer

Bright and colorful flowers and greenery always seem to liven up a garden space in the yard. However, it can be a huge disappointment, especially after a rainfall or summer storm, when these flowers sink down into the dirt and become almost nonexistent. After all that hard work, you want something that will hold up perfectly!

Here's a home decor idea for this Spring and Summer- try planting some of your favorite flowers and greenery in a hanging basket. Sure, some of the most popular indoor houseplants to hang and display are ivy and succulents. They're easy to take care of and come in a variety of different shapes and colors.

Let's takes some of these flowers to the great outdoors and create a decorative hanging planter display on the porch or backyard.

10 of the Best Hanging Plants to Buy this Spring and Summer

1. Lobelia

This perfect plant will add a gorgeous, intense blue color to a hanging basket. They're easy to take care of and require a spot that will get full sun. They also prefer rich, moist potting soil.

If the area where you're planting doesn't get much direct sunlight, no worries. Lobelia can also grow in cooler climates with shade.

2. Hanging Fuchsia

If you live in an area that tends to have cooler, wet summers, this exotic plant is one you don't want to pass up. Fuchsia is a beautiful flower that comes in a variety of colors- pink, purple, red, even multicolored.

Hang your fuchsia in a spot that only gets partial sun and in a cooler area. Also, keep an eye on your plant-hummingbirds love them!

3. Begonia

Begonias make beautiful outdoor hanging plants. Unlike fuchsia, begonias can handle heat and humidity and prefer full sun. Begonias can also survive as indoor plants, but look especially nice in hanging baskets outside.

4. Petunia

Try planting petunias in your hanging pots this Spring. Folks love them for their fullness and vibrant colors. Petunias prefer full sun (at least 5-6 hours of direct sunlight) and light, well-drained soil.

5. String of Pearls

I can't get enough of succulents. They're easy to maintain and add so much charm to any space. If you want to add some greenery to your outdoor display, string of pearls are a type of hanging succulent and known for its bead-like look. Place them in a shaded spot that will get morning direct bright light or bright indirect light. They also make great indoor hanging plants. Just keep in mind not to overwater.

6. Portulaca

Portulaca, as known as moss rose or sun rose happens to be one of my favorite colorful flowers for a hanging basket. They're easy to care for and prefer full sun. They also spread easily and attract butterflies, so keep that in mind.

You'll notice that by the end of the day the flowers will close up, but are in full bloom once it's morning time.

7. Philodendron and Spider Plant

Many types of philodendron and spider plants will thrive as indoor plants. They add a nice look to any space like the living room or study, but also act as a great low-maintenance outdoor plant. They require a space with shade and indirect sunlight and just enough water.

If you want to keep the animals and bugs away from your strawberries, try placing them in a hanging pot. Before the fruit comes in, pretty white flowers will be on display for some time. Try keeping strawberry plants in a sunny spot and water regularly.

10. Verbena

This trailing plant is weather-resistant and enjoy the sunlight. The flowers last a long time-even into the fall, and produce a variety of bold colors to liven up any outdoor space.
