'Yellowstone' Star Luke Grimes Opens Up about Kayce Dutton's Future

"I just learn to take it as it comes."

Yellowstone isn't afraid of killing off characters. And Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, is prepared for whatever fate the script deals the black sheep son of the Dutton family.

"Here's the thing with Yellowstone and my character: Hope doesn't happen," the actor, 39, told PEOPLE magazine earlier this month.

"I just learned to take it as it comes, and that's it," he added.

He's staying tight-lipped on the events of the second half of season 5, which hasn't begun filming due to the ongoing strikes in Hollywood. Still, he has revealed that "love and family" plus "a lot of juicy drama" is in store for fans of the Paramount Network's Western drama series.

There's no telling when the series' final episodes will begin production. The Writers Guild of America and The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists are picketing for revenue from streamers and a guarantee their digital likeness won't be used without their consent (some background cast members claim they've been 'body scanned' so they can be digitally inserted in future episodes with no additional pay).

The midseason finale saw the Duttons entering an all-out war against each other. Toward the end of the episode, Jamie and Sarah (Dawn Olivieri) are seen getting affectionate with each other. Jamie inquires if she knows someone who could deal with his sister Beth (Kelly Reilly) more permanently, anticipating that Beth might come after him. Sarah confirms that she does and agrees to meet potential hitmen on Jamie's behalf.

However, the episode does not conclude on this intense note. Instead, it shifts to a final scene featuring Kayce and his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille). Monica proposes the idea of moving to the east camp and taking care of the ranch for the Duttons, suggesting it could be the key to achieving their long-held desires. The scene is meaningful, but it serves as a contrast to the potential violence that the rest of the episode hinted at.

Even if Kayce doesn't make it out alive, there's still a shot Grimes will reprise the role in one of the multiple prequel series that showrunner Taylor Sheridan is cooking up in the ever-expanding Yellowstone-verse.

You can stream the first 5.5 seasons of Yellowstone on Peacock.
