Finding Your Roots, a PBS series hosted by Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr., uncovers distant family connections between celebrities. For instance, Gates has linked surprise cousins Larry David and Bernie Sanders and unlikely relatives Glenn Close and Princess Diana.
More recently, the series, which "explores race, culture and identity through genealogy and genetics, helping people to trace their ancestral histories," taught Rosanne Cash that she likely shares a "distant common Black ancestor" with Golden Globe-winning actor Angela Bassett.
Bassett, a New York native and Hollywood star, has appeared in such films as Boyz N the Hood, Waiting to Exhale, Black Panther and the Tina Turner biopic What's Love Got to Do With It. She's also starred in multiple seasons of American Horror Story.
Cash responded to this news about her "DNA cousin" excitedly: "It makes me feel like a bad ass."
The Feb. 23 episode of Finding Your Roots also features Cash's fellow Grammy-winning country music star Clint Black.
Past Finding Your Roots guests include John Waters, Jane Lynch, Jim Gaffigan and Tony Shalhoub.
"For more than a decade, renowned Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. has helped to expand America's sense of itself, stimulating a national conversation about identity with humor, wisdom and compassion," reads the show's website.
