The True Story of How Kevin Costner Almost Made a 'Bodyguard' Sequel with Princess Diana

Whitney and Diana? Would have been the ultimate franchise.

It may seem like a storybook tale, but it's true: Kevin Costner almost starred alongside Princess Diana in a sequel to the 1992 flick Bodyguard.

Speaking to PeopleTV during an episode of Couch Surfing, the Yellowstone star confirmed that both Prince William and Princess Di were interested in appearing in the movie, where Diana would have taken on the role that Whitney Houston played.

It turns out that Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York herself, was instrumental in bringing everyone together.

"Sarah was really important," Costner revealed during the interview. "I always respect Sarah because she's the one that set up the conversation between me and Diana."

He continued: "She was the one that set it up, and she never said, 'Well, what about me? I'm a princess too.' She was just so supportive of the idea."

The film, as Costner revealed during a 2012 interview with Anderson Cooper, would have followed his Bodyguard character Frank Farmer. He would have taken on the job of protecting Diana's character from stalkers and other ne'er-do-wells.

Diana had already agreed to Costner taking on writing duties, with the role created specifically with her in mind. She asked several questions and wanted to understand exactly what would be asked of her since it would have marked her very first acting role.

"I just remember her being incredibly sweet on the phone, and she asked the question, she goes, 'Are we going to have like a kissing scene?' She said it in a very respectful way," the actor recalls. "She was nervous because her life was very governed. And I said, 'Yeah, there's going to be a little bit of that, but we can make that okay too.'"

Unfortunately, none of this ever came to pass as Diana sadly passed away in a car crash in August 1997. Costner had only received the script for the sequel just one day prior.

If things had gone differently, we might have gotten this version of Bodyguard starring real royalty. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be — though you never know. Perhaps someone else could step into the role one day in the future since the script does exist.
