‘Yellowstone’ Fans Are Freaking Out Over Jefferson White’s New Role on ‘Chicago P.D.'

Yellowstone star Jefferson White is joining the cast of Chicago P.D. in a major role. After making a splash on the popular western series as a beloved ranch hand who went from rock bottom to thriving with a fiancée in Texas, White is making the move to the hit procedural drama.

White appeared in a variety of shows ahead of Yellowstone, including House of Cards, The Alienist, Blindspot, and How to Get Away with Murder. Now, he'll be joining Chicago P.D. as Sean O'Neal, the son of Police Chief O'Neal (Michael Gaston).

It looks like White's new role will bring some interesting nuance to Chicago P.D. as well. As of his first appearance, he's proven that there's more than meets the eye to his rough-around-the-edges personality. According to TV Insider, White will be working with intelligence on a case involving a sex trafficking ring.

White's jump from Yellowstone to Chicago P.D. is an exciting one, and a role that viewers likely have plenty of questions about. We've got all of them answered right here.

What Did Jefferson White Say About His New Role in Chicago P.D.?

White himself hasn't shared much about the role beyond his thoughts on Sean and how he fits into the Chicago Police Department assisting with intelligence.

"He's got access to communities that don't necessarily trust the CPD because of the history and tension," White told TVLine in an interview. "Sean himself has a complicated relationship with the police, and that also means he has a completely different perspective on [the case]."

We'll see more of how Sean interacts with the police and how this role sets White apart from lovable Jimmy in Yellowstone, especially as the pair both had difficult lives in the past. Sean has a "contentious relationship with his dad," but otherwise there are certainly similarities to his previous role in Yellowstone.

Who Does Jefferson White Play on Yellowstone?

White plays Jimmy Hurdstrom, one of the Dutton family's ranch hands at the Yellowstone. Jimmy has a bit of a checkered past, having spent time as a thief and a drug dealer. But when Jimmy's grandfather Dirk (Stanley Peternel) asks John (Kevin Costner) to take the troubled cowboy under his wing, things begin to look up for him.

Despite his good fortune at the Dutton ranch, Jimmy ends up leaving it all behind and returns to Texas with his fianceé Emily (Kathryn Kelly). While this means Jimmy is away right now, it isn't the end of his time at the ranch. We'll be seeing him again soon—and learning more about Emily.

Is Jefferson White Coming Back to Yellowstone?

As of the finale of Season 4, it seemed that Jimmy would no longer be a regular on Yellowstone since he moved to Texas with Emily. But it looks like that won't be the case, with the upcoming Season 5 and Yellowstone: 6666 spin-off series in the works.

Speaking to TVLine, White even hyped up Jimmy's return to the main series.

"He chose Emily, and he chose this new life in Texas," said White. "I cross my fingers that it's smooth sailing for him because it's a beautiful thing. It's the first time in his life he has a little bit of agency." It looks like he and Emily will have an intriguing story on their hands."

"There's certainly more Jimmy in store," White teased. "Whether it's Montana or Texas, you'll have to wait and find out."
