Tim McGraw and Lori McKenna Co-Wrote a Song For a New Documentary

Tim McGraw and Lori McKenna were tasked with penning a song for the upcoming National Geographic documentary Free Solo. The film follows climber Alex Honnold as he makes his simultaneously terrifying and inspiring attempt to climb El Capitan with no ropes.

A free solo climb of El Capitan, a 3,200-foot tall vertical granite peak in Yosemite National Park, had never been done until Honnold made his push to the summit. Directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (known for their work on the climbing doc Meru), Free Solo needed a new song to capture Honnold's mission to break the limits of what's possible. McGraw and McKenna wrote an original song that encompasses the spirit of the free soloist climber on the famous rock with a Nashville sound.

"There are few people who pursue their passion with the fearlessness of Alex Honnold," McGraw said in a statement. "It's both terrifying and exhilarating to be on that journey with him when you watch Free Solo. Lori McKenna and I wanted the lyric of 'Gravity' to be a reminder that fear is a battle fought on a variety of planes, from mental to spiritual to physical. We tend to think 'fearlessness' is synonymous with big bold gestures, but there's also a fragility inherent in risk — and we wanted that to come through."

McGraw, who sings the new track, previously worked alongside singer-songwriter Lori McKenna on the huge hit "Humble and Kind." McKenna wrote the song, which went on to win Best Country Song at the Grammys in 2017.
