Bryce Leatherwood got to showcase his singing chops yet again on Monday night's (Dc. 5) episode of The Voice, and this time, he took a page from Justin Moore by singing his 2011 song, "If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away."
The Team Blake member began the tune by sitting before a large curtain installation. With his signature cowboy hat next to him, he dove into the song while acoustic instrumentation backed him up. The song tells an emotional story about wanting to visit one's relatives in heaven, and Leatherwood's performance encapsulated this emotion as his voice soared during the chorus.
Leatherwood then moved into the bridge, and the lights flared as he sang, "It would do me good just to see them smile," referencing loved ones in heaven. The performance soared even more in the final chorus when Leatherwood stood up, and the curtains behind him came cascading down, making for an impressive visual effect. As the crowd cheered him on, he continued to sing the last verse, and background singers added a gospel-like aspect to the song. He removed his hat and ended the song strongly with one final high note.
Leatherwood, from Woodstock, Georgia, hasn't had to work hard to prove his country cred throughout his time on the show. The singer possesses a strong voice with a pronounced Southern twang, and he has performed songs by George Strait, Travis Tritt, Zac Brown Band, Morgan Wallen, and more throughout the competition. He got the attention of Shelton and received a chair turn from him when he performed "Goodbye Time," a Conway Twitty song that Shelton once covered during his blind audition.
Monday night's show also saw performances from the rest of the Top 8, which includes Omar Jose Cardona, Bodie, Brayden Lape, Justin Aaron, Parijita Bastola, Kim Cruse, and Morgan Myles. The night included solo performances and duets of classic Whitney Houston songs. Leatherwood and Myles collaborated on Houston's "Saving All My Love For You."
The Voice will continue into the finals next week, and the winner will be announced during the finale on Tuesday, December 13.
