'The Voice': 13 and 15-Year-Old 'Best Friends' Compete in the Battles

It was a tough choice for coach Niall Horan.

What happens when two teenage besties sing together on "The Voice?" They make magical music. Unfortunately, the two Team Niall members were paired for the battle round, so only one would come out the winner.

Coach Niall Horan chose two of the youngest contestants in the competition — 13-year-old Julia Roome and 15-year-old Olivia Eden — for a performance of Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me." The two self-proclaimed "best friends" both have a sweet, songbird characteristic to their voices, but with distinctly different styles. The singers took to the stage for a pleasant and dynamic rendition of the 1998 single, both showcasing their unique voices and coming together for flawless harmony. Their great friendship showed up in the performance as well, as they traded lines and looked happy to be onstage together.

The coaches thoroughly enjoyed the performance, with John Legend giving credit to both singers. He stressed that no matter what happens, the singers are still young and at the beginning of their careers. Reba McEntire praised the singers' confidence, saying she would have been "crawling on the floor" at that age. She also gave them a tip to stay in the moment of the song and make contact with the audience. Gwen Stefani then praised the "originality" of both girls' voices.

Horan expressed his distress over the choice, saying he didn't want to break up the duo, but he needed to choose one of them.

"Please remember you're so young, there's so many years to learn what your voice can and cannot do," he told the singers before making his choice.

He then chose Roome as the winner of the battle. The two friends shared a hug before Eden departed from the stage.

"[Julia] has this dreaminess about her when she sings," Horan said later. "She knows exactly who she is as an artist even at this young age. There's a little spark in Julia that you don't see a lot."

"The Voice" airs on NBC Monday and Tuesday nights.
