Rooted in Country: Lily Rose on Kenny Chesney's 'I Go Back'

Atlanta-raised country singer-songwriter Lily Rose was already a self-taught drummer and guitarist before she found her voice as a singer and began performing sold out shows around her college town of Athens, Georgia. Nearly three years after moving to Nashville, Rose posted a clip of her song "Villain" on TikTok. The song was an immediate smash, earning Rose millions of views and streams, the No. 1 spot on the iTunes all-genre and country charts and a label deal with Big Loud and Republic Records.

Since gaining attention (and over 500k TikTok followers) for her honeyed vocals and haunting, heartfelt lyrics, Rose has released "Overnight Sensation" and the Sam Hunt co-write "Remind Me of You"

While she draws from a multitude of genres and artists for inspiration, Rose says it was a Kenny Chesney song that first made her fall in love with country music.

"Growing up in Atlanta, I was surrounded by all types of music — especially rap and R&B, and all things Bruce Springsteen. But the first country song that ever struck a chord with me was 'I Go Back' by Kenny Chesney," Rose tells Wide Open Country. "I remember being thirteen in the seventh grade hearing that song play on a boom box. It was the first time I knew I wanted to dig deeper into a genre. To this day, as country music evolves, I find different influences and aspects of the genre that still feel brand new to me and try to blend elements from both of them."

Today (July 23), Rose released "Know My Way Around," which has already racked up nearly 2 million views after Rose shared the demo version on TikTok in June. The song, which Rose wrote with Savana Santos and Julian Bunetta, is an irresistible pop-country jam about the joy of getting to know a new love.

Rose will join Chris Lane's Fill Them Boots tour this fall.
