Niall Horan Regrets Pairing Two Talented Singers in 'The Voice' Battle Round: 'I'm Battling With Myself'

It was one tough decision

The Battle round is one of the most difficult rounds for coaches on "The Voice," as they are tasked with pairing up talented members of their team and choosing one to move forward. Niall Horan felt that difficulty on Tuesday night's episode (Oct. 17) when he paired Lennon VanderDoes against Tanner Massey on a rendition of Billy Joel's "She's Always A Woman."

Both artists impressed coaches during the Blind Auditions with their dynamic and versatile voices. Massey — a 19-year-old singer — has power behind his voice as well as the ability to perform complex vocal runs. VanderDoes, on the other hand, offers a unique tone with soaring high notes. Both artists excelled in their rendition of the tune, showcasing their unique abilities while also working together to create a smooth collaboration. Horan and his fellow coaches were in awe of the performance, but that didn't make Horan's choice any easier.

Stefani was the first coach to share her excitement. She remarked about the uniqueness of VanderDoes' voice, but when it came to Massey, she had a strong reaction.

"When Tanner started, I was like, 'Wait a minute, I am dead in love with you,'" she said. She then told Horan she would choose Massey as the winner.

Legend also spoke to both artists' talent and revealed that "She's Always A Woman" inspired his hit song, "All of Me." He also said he would "lean ever so slightly" towards Massey.

Horan took a serious tone as he made his decision.

"This is one of the battles where I'm really battling with myself, and now I'm regretting putting you in the same pairing," Horan said.

In the end, Horan with with his "gut" and chose VanderDoes as the winner of the battle.

"There's nobody in this competition that has a tone even remotely near him, and that makes him a very, very dark horse," Horan said after the segment.
