Whitley released his first full-length album L.A. to Miami in 1985. The album spawned the hits "Miami, My Amy" and "Ten Feet Away." His 1988 album Don't Close Your Eyes solidified his status as a country superstar and featured his timeless songs (and No. 1 hits) "I'm No Stranger to the Rain," "When You Say Nothing At All" and the album's title track.

The Kentucky-born singer passed away in 1989 from alcohol poisoning. He was 33 years old.

Keith Whitley: A Tribute Album was released in 1994 and included artists such as Alan Jackson, Alison Krauss, Tracy Lawrence, Joe Diffie and Mark Chesnutt covering Whitley's songs. The album includes Alison Krauss and Union Station's cover of "When You Say Nothing At All," which was a Top 10 hit in 1995 and won the CMA award for Single of the Year.
