Kacey Musgraves' outfit turned heads on April 4 at the Broadway premiere of the new, countrified musical comedy Shucked. It was snakeskin all over, with a comparable pattern on the country star's boots, turtleneck top and trench coat. Brown and tan shades on each piece make her near waist-length brunette locks stand out even more.
Musgraves brought a date other than her partner, author Cole Schafer. Her nana, Barbara Musgraves, made the trip to New York City and wore pearl necklaces and earrings for the occasion. Nana stole the show on her granddaughter's 2019 holiday special for Amazon Prime, The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show, and surely brought just as much salt-of-the-earth charm to the red carpet.
Per Deadline, Shucked "combines the winking hayseed humor of Green Acres and Hee Haw with the decidedly urban, gently subversive camp that peppered the Off Broadway scene in the '90s with kitschy fare like Ruthless!, The Real Live Brady Bunch and Theatre-A-Go!-Go!'s Valley of the Dolls parody." Its music was composed by award-winning country songwriters and regular Musgraves collaborators Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark. Musgraves, McAnally and Clark have written together as a trio, with the most notable result being "Follow Your Arrow."
McAnally, Clark and script writer Robert Horn expressed their enthusiasm for the musical in a joint statement.
"Shucked is a passion project," it read. "There was something about this idea, this style of humor and this music, that kept this little engine going. What will be on stage at the Nederlander is a story about how we all have the gift of heroism inside us, and about learning to open our hearts to those who are different than us so that growth can happen... and of course, about corn... because the basic thing that unity and acceptance need for survival, is a kernel of truth."
Musgraves wasn't the only country star in the audience. Kelsea Ballerini was on hand with her celebrity partner, actor Chase Stokes. As were Jennifer Nettles, Walker Hayes, Carly Pearce, all four members of Little Big Town and one of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's daughters, Gracie.
