'Justified: City Primeval' Star Adelaide Clemens on What It's Really Like Working With Timothy Olyphant

Like doing 'acting gymnastics.'

FX's Justified: City Primeval, a fresh take on Elmore Leonard's novel, has had a fantastic seven episodes, in no small part due to a riveting performance by Adelaide Clemens. In a recent episode, the series dropped a bombshell as Clemens' character, Sandy, betrays Clement (Boyd Holbrook) to U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) before swiftly departing Detroit, still pursued by the Albanians. Here's a full rundown of the wild Episode 7 before next week's big finale.

In Justified: City Primeval, the storyline takes a twist from the original series, centering on Raylan in a reimagined plot. Yet, the dynamic between Clemens' Sandy and Clement Mansell echoes the captivating relationship of Ava and Boyd Crowder from the show's initial six seasons - an intelligent, beautiful woman drawn to an enigmatic yet charismatic criminal.

As fans anticipate the limited series' gripping conclusion, set to air on FX on August 29 and stream on Hulu the next day, Clemens offers insights into her character, on-set experiences, and the thrill of working alongside star and executive producer Timothy Olyphant in an interview with Country Living. (Note: the interview was conducted on June 28, which was before the SAG-AFTRA strike had begun).

She says that working with Olyphant is like doing "acting gymnastics" and recalls one of the most memorable moments on set.

"Tim is so fun. It's like acting gymnastics because he comes up with things at the very last minute for you to play—not for his character but for you," she said. "So we were doing that scene in episode two where Sandy answers the door in her bathrobe, and Tim was like, 'What if she's sick?' It was a seven-page scene where I suddenly had to play sick and figure out how to do that. So part of the panic that you see Sandy going through in that scene is actually just my genuine panic about, like, is this going to look insane? But that was really fun."

Clemens' familiar face has likely graced your screens before. The Australian actress boasts an impressive TV portfolio, including FX's Under the Banner of Heaven, CBS's Tommy, and a memorable stint as Tawney Talbot in AMC+'s acclaimed Southern gothic series Rectify. She's also made her mark in indie films like 2022's The Swearing Jar alongside Patrick J. Adams.
