Hershey's shell topping is one of the greatest gifts to man. A chocolate topping on your ice cream that hardens into a perfectly crunchy shell? Amazing! The only problem is, Hershey accidentally filled the bottles with nuts instead of chocolate, and has issued a recall for the Hershey's Chocolate Shell Topping.
Hershey Recalls Chocolate Shell Topping
The Hershey Company has issued a voluntary recall for its beloved shell topping. Reportedly, Hershey accidentally filled at least 1,700 7.25-ounce bottles with Heath Shell Topping instead of the chocolate the bottles advertise. The Heath Shell topping contains almonds in it, making the mistake potentially deadly for those with a nut allergy.
The recall notice was posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), along with the Hershey's website. It says that the bottles with product code 25JSAS1, containing nuts instead of chocolate, were shipped to retailers around the country between April 15th and May 3rd. Any Hershey's Chocolate Shell Topping products bought before the 15th of April aren't included in the recall, as those should all contain the regular chocolate shell.
Any chocolate-lovers with an allergy or severe sensitivity to almonds are at risk of an allergic reaction if they consume the recalled product. The recall notice explains that "the situation arose due to an isolated error at a contract manufacturing facility" and that Hershey took "immediate steps" to prevent the mistake from happening again.
So far, there haven't been any reports of illness or allergic reactions due to the undeclared almonds in various topping bottles. However, anyone allergic to the allergens in almonds should check if the Hershey products in your home have a lot code 25jsas1!
