Trace Adkins costars in a new film that's sure to encourage viewers to follow their dreams and express themselves. The new movie, released March 16th in theaters, is called I Can Only Imagine, based on the popular Christian song of the same title.
The film follows MercyMe's Bart Millard (played by J. Michael Finley) as he pens a song about the complicated relationship he had with his dad who passed away when Bart was 18 years old. His father, Arthur, is played by Dennis Quaid. Trace Adkins takes on the role of another older male influence, Scott Brickell, MercyMe's manager since 2001.
In the film's trailer, Adkins is briefly seen encouraging Finley's character to address the pain he feels when thinking about his father through music. Adkins' deep, gravely voice gives immediate depth to the character and weight to what he's suggesting. Though neither of them knows it at the time, the song he encourages the MercyMe singer to write eventually becomes one of the most popular Christian radio songs of all time.
MercyMe rerecorded "I Can Only Imagine" and released a new music video featuring clips of the film seen here. They also added a sweeping sound to the song, giving it a cinematic feel.
