Wynonna Judd appeared on The Voice again Tuesday night (Nov. 7) as the Mega Mentor, and she teamed up with Coach Gwen Stefani to coach singers prior to the Knockout round. During rehearsals, Judd was particularly touched by 19-year-old Tanner Massey's performance of Shawn Mendes' "In My Blood."
Massey relates to the song due to his trouble making friends in high school because of his acting obligations. In the tune, Mendes sings, "Help me, it's like the walls are caving in / Sometimes I feel like giving up / No medicine is strong enough / Someone help me."
The song clearly resonated with Judd as well, but for a very different reason. After his rehearsal performance, she shared a vulnerable memory from the day her mom and longtime duo partner, Naomi Judd, passed away.
"I felt that way a year ago when my mom died," Judd told Massey. "I remember getting the phone call and I literally said, 'Somebody help me.'"
Naomi died on April 30, 2022 at the age of 76.
"Right about here, I felt it well up, and that's what songs are supposed to do, as painful as they are," she added, motioning to her heart. "Whatever you went through to get there, I'm sorry too."
Stefani then praised Massey's ability to express such emotion in a song at a young age. Judd then sent one more compliment Massey's way.
"You're saying what we're feeling, so amen," she said. "This hillbilly got it."
The segment also included rehearsals from Chechi Sarai with Jackson 5's "Never Can Say Goodbye" and Rudi with Silk Sonic's "Smokin' Out the Window." All three artists shined during the actual Knockout performance, and the night included some shocking and suspenseful moments for Stefani's team.
The Voice airs on Monday and Tuesday nights on NBC.
