The Voice battles continued on Monday night (Oct. 30), and John Legend paired two young, powerhouse singers for a rendition of Olivia Rodrigo's "traitor." 17-year-old Kaylee Shimizu and 22-year-old Elizabeth Evans took on the soaring, multiplatinum hit, and although they both possess impeccable voices, only one could move forward in the competition.
Coach Legend shared his enthusiasm for this particular battle during rehearsals, saying it may turn out to be his "favorite." When the singers took the stage on the night of the battles, they both ripped into the song — directed at the various boys that broke their hearts — with plenty of passion. Shimizu, who Legend says can do "anything" with her voice, stood out of her impeccable range and power, especially for such a young singer. Evans showcased her powerful voice as well as her unique vocal quality and grit. The judges looked mesmerized as the two closed out the song in harmony.
McEntire, specifically, was taken with Evans' performance, saying she was "in awe" of her talent. Niall Horan was equally impressed with both performers, telling them their rendition was the best cover of "traitor" he's ever heard. He specifically complimented Evans' artistry. Stefani also praised both singers, giving a nod to Shimizu's obvious talent, but also pointing out Evans' originality.
When it came time for Legend to choose, he had a tough task on his hands. He called Evans "quirky" and "interesting" as well as talented. He then handed Shimizu a huge compliment, saying there's "very few people on the planet" with her level of ability. The coach chose Shimizu as the winner of the battle, much to her shock and excitement.
Evans, who was presumably on her way home, then thanked Legend for his time. As she walked offstage waving goodbye to the coaches, McEntire sneakily pressed her button to use her final steal for Nashville native before she left the competition.
"Us Nashville girls gotta stay together," McEntire said after the steal.
When McEntire sat back in her seat, Legend commended her steal, saying he had a feeling she was about to do something "dramatic."
"I pulled a Blake," she said, referencing longtime coach Blake Shelton, who had a knack for stealing artists.
The Voice airs on Monday and Tuesday nights on NBC.
