The battles are one of the most high-stakes rounds in "The Voice", as coaches must say goodbye to talented singers after each performance. There is one saving grace, though. Each coach has a couple of opportunities to "steal" an eliminated singer and add them to their team. Reba McEntire made use of one of her steals on Monday night's (Oct. 23) episode.
McEntire's steal occurred after Team Gwen's Bias and Jacquie Roar put on an electric performance of Jelly Roll's "Need a Favor." Both artists stood out during the performance — Roar for her impressive vocals and Bias for his voice and energetic performance — but Stefani chose Bias in the end. Roar wasn't about to leave the competition that easily though, and McEntire wasn't about to let a powerhouse singer like her go home. After Stefani chose Bias as the winner, Roar got her chance to speak, and she quickly plead her case.
"I want to say thank you, but I also want to say I'm a very hard worker, I'm a very hard singer, so somebody hit that button because I'm not leaving this stage," she said confidently.
McEntire then hit her button to steal Roar, and the crowd erupted with excitement.
"You knew it was going to be me! I wanted you in the first place," said McEntire, who originally turned her chair for Roar during the auditions.
Host Carson Daly remarked that this may be the first time an eliminated singer directly asked to be stolen.
"I don't think we've ever had anybody that's asked for the steal and then it happened," he said.
Soon after the steal, Stefani commented that she's "jealous" that McEntire gets to have her former team member. McEntire also shared her excitement to have Roar — who earned a four-chair turn in the auditions — on her team.
"You don't usually see a person that got a four-chair turn up for a steal, so I was really thrilled about that," said McEntire.
"She's my spirit animal," added Roar. "I just want to make music with her. I want her to take me under her wing and take me everywhere in the country."
"The Voice" airs on Monday and Tuesday nights on NBC.
