'The Voice': 16-Year-Old Brayden Lape Gives a Vulnerable Performance of Brett Young's 'Mercy'

The knockout round continued on The Voice season 22 on Monday night (Nov. 7), and coach Blake Shelton had another tough decision to make between three talented singers. The three singers on Team Blake who competed were Austin Montgomery, Brayden Lape, and Eva Ullman, and Shelton could only choose one to move forward.

16-year-old Lape chose to sing Brett Young's emotional 2017 single, "Mercy." He took the stage confidently and showed off his soft but distinct voice while singing the heartbreak tune. He hit the notes correctly and even added a few runs and his own flair to the tune which really stood out among his fellow competitors. His performance greatly impressed the judges, and Gwen Stefani, especially, wore a smile for the entirety of the song. She also shared how Lape was "so cute" as he sang the tune. John Legend seemed happy with the performance as well, and Camila Cabello enjoyed the song and Stefani's strong reaction to the performance. Stefani made sure to note multiple time that she loved him "as a mom" would.

Blake Shelton, however, didn't show much emotion while listening to the song, but instead watched intently, most likely trying to decide if Lape was an artist who would be moving on in the competition. Although Shelton gave compliments to all the singers, he ultimately chose Lape to continue on to the live rounds of the show.

Although they didn't make it through the knockout round, Austin Montgomery and Eva Ullman also took to the stage to perform. Montgomery, beloved to this point for his old school soul and classic song choices, sang a rendition of George Strait's "You Look So Good In Love," and Ullman took on Ariana Grande's "Dangerous Woman."

The Voice will continue on Monday, Nov. 14 as the Top 16 perform. The number of artists will continue dwindling down until the winner is announced at the finale on Tuesday, Dec. 13.
