The "Cheesy" Lyric That Almost Kept Luke Bryan From Recording This Hit

This song was a massive hit for Luke Bryan, but the "American Idol" judge almost didn’t record the No. 1 hit.

The song "Drunk On You" was a massive hit for Luke Bryan. However, the American Idol judge almost didn't record the No. 1 hit. Why? He thought one line in the song was "cheesy."

What Was the Line Luke Bryan Thought Was "Cheesy"?

The 50-year-old Bryan talked about the song with Bobby Bones on The BobbyCast earlier this month. Bryan didn't write "Drunk On You." Rodney Clawson, Chris Tompkins, and Josh Kear penned it. But he said that he almost turned down the song because of one particular lyric.

"The biggest scare of that song was, 'You make my speakers go boom boom.' 'Is it cheesy? How cheesy is it? How cheesy? Is it cheesy?'" said Bryan. "I never considered changing it. I considered it being so cheesy that I may need to back away from it."

He eventually came around to the line. After playing a demo of the song on tour, he saw everyone singing along. That's when he knew he had something special, despite the lyric.

He said, "[At] the afterparties... we would put speakers up at Farm Tour, and we would play that demo, and I watched everybody in my crew start singing, 'Girl, you make my speakers go boom boom.' And I went, 'None of these people seem to have a problem with it.'"

It Took a While for the Singer To "Let Go" of the Line

Later in the interview, Bryan joked that those in his inner circle told him he had to "let go of this boom boom thing." The singer eventually did, and the song became a huge hit. It sat at the top of the Hot Country charts for two weeks. It also reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.

"It was that time where I was trusting my gut, I was trusting my songwriters' gut, and I was trusting people in the label's gut," he said. "You just had a crew of people that... we were firing, and it was fun and man, I mean, [that] song really tells a great story."
