The trailer for Sofia Coppola's Priscilla is here, and it's a romantic retro dream. Following Priscilla Presley's 1985 memoir Elvis and Me, the story chronicles her relationship with the one and only king of rock n' roll. If Elvis fans were left wanting more following Baz Luhrmann's Oscar-nominated Elvis, look no further than this new drama that will chronicle the whirlwind romance from Priscilla's point of view.
The trailer opens with Priscilla getting dolled up in full glam with carefully placed winged eyeliner, mascara, fake lashes and curlers topped off with a generous shower of hairspray. It then cuts to a young Elvis playing the piano with Priscilla completely enamored, likely in Germany, where they first met during Presley's service with the U.S. Army. We see a series of shots of the two early in their love story, followed by snippets of their marriage and welcoming baby Lisa Marie. And a preview of their wedding day, where Priscilla's ensemble is a dead ringer for the real thing.
As one would expect with Sofia Coppola, known for her iconic 2006 retelling of Marie Antoinette's lavish life and untimely death, the film looks like a masterclass in turning a classic story into a romantic art piece. In less than a minute, the trailer makes it impossible not to fall in love with this version of the Presleys, regardless of how many times we've heard and seen the story. Coincidentally, Coppola and Presley herself have drawn many parallels between Marie's experience in Versaille and Priscilla's coming of age in Graceland.
Cailee Spaeny (Mare of Easttown) stars as the titular Priscilla, from her early days as a lovesick teen to a young divorcée left with a child and a broken heart. Jacob Elordi (Euphoria) will portray Elvis, the latest actor to take on the legendary performer, following Austin Butler's 2022 Oscar-nominated performance.
Priscilla Presley was open in her support for Elvis, even posing with Austin Butler on red carpets and praising his performance as her late ex-husband. Her granddaughter, Riley Keough, even revealed that watching the film was emotional for her family as Butler was one of the first actors to play Elvis with "humanity."
Historically, most renditions have focused on Elvis himself, but Coppala is ready to put Priscilla front and center. Presley is serving as an executive producer on the film and, according to Coppola, has been incredibly generous with her time, memory and support of Cailee bringing her story to the screen.
