Mom, Who Vanished for 24 Years Then Was Arrested, Has Charges Dismissed

Michele Hundley Smith suddenly dropped off the radar way back in 2001. According to People, Smith, who was 38 at the time, vanished on December 9 of that year. She lived in Rockingham County, North Carolina, and was allegedly headed to Martinsville, Virginia, to do some Christmas shopping. But Smith seemed to vanish into thin air. Then, amazingly, she resurfaced "at an undisclosed location in North Carolina," per the outlet. On February 20, 2026, authorities stated that Michele Hundley Smith, now 62, was still alive and she was doing fine. However, a bizarre twist in her saga was yet to come.

Smith Was Arrested Soon After Her Reappearance

Smith was supposed to be in court on December 27, 2001. She had been charged with DWI the previous month. Just days after she was found this year, Smith was arrested due to a failure-to-appear warrant connected with that years-old case. Luck was with her, though. A judge decided to throw out the charge on Monday, June 8. Per The Charlotte Observer, "The prosecutor cited the lack of an original police file and the retirement of the arresting officer."

When the newspaper asked Michele Hundley Smith for a reaction, she only said, ""I am extremely happy, and I'm going to see my daughter."

Smith Has Said Very Little About Vanishing for So Long

She was terse in March when questioned about her over two-decades-long absence following a court hearing. Asked by The Charlotte Observer about the reason for her disappearance, she replied, "It was personal. I had my own demons at the time and I was in my own head, and I had my reasons. People who've been in that situation will understand."

Per People, Smith explained to authorities that she went missing "due to alleged domestic issues." However, there does not seem to be a record of anything of that nature being reported.

Her daughter, Amanda, reportedly embraced her mom at the courthouse three months ago, according to The Charlotte Observer. Amanda spoke briefly to reporters that day. Her attitude seems to be one of compassion and forgiveness. "It wasn't that she didn't want contact with us. It was never that, because she reached out to me. I'm not going to hold any grudge, because shes my mom. Stuff's always going to happen."
