How 'Good Bones' Star Mina Starsiak Found Love With Husand Steve Hawk

Audiences have fallen in love with HGTV stars Mina Starsiak and her mother Karen E. Laine, watching them restore historic houses in their hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana on HGTV's Good Bones.

Despite Mina's loveable no-nonsense personality and tough work ethic we've grown accustomed to on the show, she actually had a rocky start with longtime love, Steve Hawk.

The couple met for the first time on Facebook and then ended up watching a basketball game together with a group of friends. Unfortunately, Steve's first impression didn't go over so well.

"He ignored me all night," Mina told Country Living. "He let his friend hit on me!"

But she decided to give him another chance and got his phone number. She texted him, "We're going to try this again tomorrow—you get one more shot."

According to Karen, Steve and Mina went through some tough times at the beginning of their relationship, which started in 2013.

"They broke up for a while because he behaved really badly—in a phenomenally bad way," Karen told Country Living. "When they decided to get back together, the only thing I said to him was 'Don't ever hurt her again because you'll have me.'"

Luckily, Steve took that advice to heart, an example that first impressions don't necessarily need to be a deal-breaker.

"I don't really think first impressions matter, because I love him," Karen continued. "I love him because we have been through some conflict and struggle together and we have grown in that. We have both committed to working through that."

After a couple of years of dating, Steve proved that he was ready to make his girlfriend Mina Starsiak Hawk. He sent Mina on a romantic scavenger hunt that ended with him popping the question on the 50-yard line of the Indianapolis Colts stadium. This was right before Mina and her mother, business partners of local home renovation company Two Chicks and a Hammer, would be airing the pilot of their HGTV series. Steve, a real estate agent, had even worked with the duo multiple times around town.

On June 11, 2016, the couple finally said "I do" in their beloved hometown with an incredible reception at Indy's 1899 building. Mina shared photos of her beautiful dress on social media.

In 2018, the couple welcomed their first child together, son Jack Richard Hawk. After a year of trying for a second child, Mina was vocal on social media about her IVF journey when they realized it wasn't going to happen without some extra help.

Luckily, the couple announced in March that IVF worked and baby number two is on the way!

The mother-daughter duo has been starring on their HGTV show together since 2016 and Good Bones season 5 will be airing this year. Though Karen announced her retirement from Two Chicks and a Hammer, she will still be on the show focusing mostly on DIY projects in the new season. Mina and Karen also recently opened Two Chicks District Co, a home goods store in Indianapolis.

Despite how hard Mina works, she knows that she found a good match with husband Steve Hawk. He helps her make sure she doesn't drown herself in work.

"He's much more sentimental than I am," she said. "I'll just go, go, go, with my head in the sand till I don't know when."
