Located in the small town of Tomball, Texas sits a family restaurant who likes to do it big. Originally opened in 1977, serving fabulous food to customers has always been a big part of the Weirich family. The family first served chicken to hungry customers, and in 1985, the family named the restaurant Mel's Cafe after their only daughter Melody. They added burgers to the menu and continued to serve the community. Then in 1994, the name was changed to Mel's Country Cafe and the menu was revamped again to include country favorites like fried catfish and chicken fried steak when Owner Jeff and Melody took it over the family business.
As the story goes, one hungry customer sat down at the table one day and asked for a burger. The Mel Burger, which features a 1-pound burger with 1/2 pound of bacon, 3 slices of American cheese, and all the traditional toppings, wasn't enough for him, so Melody headed into the kitchen to whip up the Mega Mel Burger complete with One and a half pounds of ground beef, a full pound of bacon, 1/4 pound of American cheese and all the trimmings.
The Mega Mel Burger Challenge
This burger is absolutely massive, and for only $24.99 it could be all yours. Devour the one and a half pounds of beef in under the two-hour time limit and your name will be added to the Mega Mel Burger Challenge wall of fame. You'll also probably get a stomach ache, but that's a small price to pay for this burger.
Not into food challenges? Mel's Country Cafe is home to some of your homemade southern comfort food favorites including onion rings, fried chicken, and even steak fingers. And you can also order Mel's burger if you are craving something a bit more normal in size. It was named one of the 50 Greatest Hamburgers in Texas by Texas Monthly, so it's definitely worth the drive from Houston for.
