Major Character Killed Off in 'Marshals' Spinoff Premiere

It was like a guessing game reminiscent of "Who Killed J.R.?" on Dallas years ago. This time, fans were agog about whether the character of Monica Dutton, Kayce Dutton's wife, would return for the new, highly-anticipated Yellowstone spinoff, Marshals. Actress Kelsey Asbille, who played Monica, was not announced as a cast member. That had tongues wagging right off the bat. As of the premiere on Sunday, March 1, however, it viewers finally have a definitive answer. One that may dishearten them.

There Were Singnificant Hints That Monica Is Dead

The first episode of Marshals had plenty of clues that Monica Dutton is no more. Per People, "Monica's absence was felt throughout the episode, as hints continued to appear that she was no longer alive." One clear indication of her fate came when Kayce has a dream in which he cannot reach her. Then he awakens to find himself alone in bed without her beside him.

Another sign that Monica is deceased came when Kayce and his son, Tate, argued about his attendance at a protest over mines dumping toxic material on the reservation. Tate emotionally declares to his dad, "After how much Mom suffered, you should be leading the charge here, not waving the white flag." He holds a photo of her, a further emblem of Monica's demise.

Kayce Does and Says Things That Prove Monica Has Died

Perhaps the most glaring statement about Monica's whereabouts came when Thomas Rainwater says to Kayce, "I don't think we've seen you on Broken Rock since Monica's burial." He replies, "Yeah, she picked out her favorite spot on East Camp for me to visit her." When he goes to her grave, Kayce eventually bursts into sorrowful tears. Anguished, he says, "I miss you, baby. I miss my wife — my best friend. My only friend."

He continues brokenheartedly, "I've been so lost. The best part of me died with you. You've always told me to fight for the life I want. But I had the life I wanted — it was with you." Kayce vows "to find a new beginning for me and Tate." Then he exclaims, "I love you, baby."

What's ahead for Kayce Dutton and whether he gets a new love interest remain to be seen.
