When details of Dan + Shay's fourth studio album, Good Things (out Aug. 13), reached fans in mid-July, one name stood out in the songwriting credits: Bill Withers. Had the soul icon, who'd passed away in 2020, took part in a Music Row co-write, or had one of his songs been sampled by contemporary country music's most decorated duo? The song in question, "Lying," hit streaming services on Friday (July 30), and flourishes of the familiar piano accompaniment from "Lean On Me" confirmed that the latter was the case.
Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney share songwriting credits for their latest R&B-flavored breakup song with Withers, Andy Albert and Jordan Reynolds.
It's from the Nashville superstars' first new album since its self-titled effort from 2018. The duo has dominated awards shows since then, including three straight wins in the Grammys' Best Country Duo/Group Performance category.
Other tracks of note include award-winning Justin Bieber collaboration "10,000 Hours" and radio hits "I Should Probably Go to Bed" and "Glad You Exist."

Pop star Shawn Mendes and Old Dominion member Brad Tursi are among Smyers' other songwriting collaborators.
