Brooke Eden Engaged to Girlfriend of 5 Years Hilary Hoover

Country singer-songwriter Brooke Eden is engaged to her longtime girlfriend Hilary Hoover, a radio promoter.

PEOPLE reports that each woman popped the question in two separate marriage proposals held nine days apart.

"Our thing has always been 50/50," Eden told PEOPLE. "We started dating on Dec. 8, 2015, and by Christmas of 2015, I had bought us matching necklaces that said '50/50.' That's just how equally yoked we've been since the very beginning."

Eden and Hoover met when Hoover began working at Eden's record label.

Hoover first proposed to the "Act Like You Don't" singer on May 13 by taking her on a trip and surprising her with greeting cards at each stop along the way. When they reached one of their favorite vacation spots in Arizona, Hoover handed Eden the final card, which read  "I've been giving you cards all day long because I knew I wouldn't have the words to say, so I guess this would be the time to ask, will you be my wife?".

But Eden had already been planning a surprise proposal for Hoover. With a PEOPLE magazine interview as part of the ruse, Eden took Hoover to the rooftop of the Virgin Hotel on Music Row and popped the question. Hoover's family and several of the couples' friends were secretly waiting in the wings to celebrate with the newly engaged pair.

Eden's trilogy of music videos for "No Shade," "Sunroof" and "Got No Choice" feature Hoover.

"I want people to see a real relationship between two women that no one has seen in any [country music] video," Eden told PEOPLE. "We're not doing anything that's particularly sexual, but it's our natural chemistry where you can just tell that we naturally love each other. You grow up watching videos your whole life of Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, or even Kelsea [Ballerini] and Morgan [Evans] or Maren [Morris] and Ryan [Hurd]. It's important to me as an artist, as a woman and as an LGBTQ woman to feel equal to a straight woman, a straight artist."

The Florida-raised artist publicly came out as gay in January of 2021 with a series of photos on Instagram.

"I guess I've never really told our story. I started by posting pictures of us without captions. Then started using vague words to describe who she was to me," Eden wrote. "Finally, a little over a year ago, I got comfortable enough to tell y'all who she really is @hilary_hoover —the love of my life. The journey hasn't been easy, but our love always has. This is just the beginning of us sharing our story. Now, almost all of my songs about her and you'll get to hear some very soon 😍"
