Beloved celebrity spouses Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani turned typical black tie affair attire on its head Sunday night (Aug. 2) at the 2023 CMT Music Awards. During their red carpet arrival, both wore suit jackets, dress shirts and neck ties, with the rest of their outfits better reflecting their usual senses of style.
Shelton looked like a rancher who's compromised his "going out" look enough to blend in at a small town's fanciest restaurant. From the waist down, it's fresh blue jeans and high-end cowboy boots. Again, it was classy without abandoning trademark elements of the country star's time-tested image.
Stefani's version of this incorporates a two-sizes-too-big suit jacket and an almost as baggy white dress shirt. A sparking, gold skirt keeps the Stefani brand intact, as do fishnets and fuzzy, knee-high boots. Her on-point makeup and earring game stayed the same, with both topped off by twin hair buns.
The couple made the list of performers for the CBS broadcast, which airs live from Austin. Stefani will sing alongside fellow red carpet highlight Lainey Wilson, while Shelton flew solo. For his rendition of "No Body," Shelton wore an untucked western shirt and a gray and black jacket that are more in line with his nightly onstage presentation.
Shelton's '90s country line-dancing-themed video for "No Body" is in the running for the evening's top prize, Video of the Year. It's up against Kane and Katelyn Brown's "Thank God," Carrie Underwood's "Hate My Heart," Cody Johnson's "Human," Hardy and Wilson's "Wait in the Truck" and Morgan Wallen's "You Proof." An 18-time nominee, Shelton has won nine CMT Music Award trophies since 2010. He shared his most recent win --2020's Collaborative Video of the Year for "Nobody But You"-- with Stefani.
