Would you risk your life to save someone else's? I know I would, but I think I might personally draw the line at going into a burning building. But one Long Island mom and son duo went the extra mile to save their neighbor's life.
As reported by People, the incident happened on Tuesday, March 31. It was a normal day for Jovani Moss. He was waiting for his school bus on Leighton Court in Melville, Long Island. The 15-year-old recalled that he was on his phone when he noticed something wrong.
"I was on my phone and I didn't notice the fire at first... But I heard the crackling of the fire and I turned to look and called my mom." A pretty natural reaction, right? Especially for a teenager!
His mom, Natechia Moss, recalled the moment her son called her. "He said, 'Mom, the house across the street is on fire. What should I do? Should I go over there, or should I just call 911?'" She immediately told her son to call 911.

The Mom Then Took Drastic Action To Save Her Neighbor From the Fire
But that isn't the only thing she did. She started sprinting outside, still in her pajamas, to her neighbor's ablaze house. She rang the doorbell, but no one answered. Then fight or flight kicked in. Guess which one she picked?
"I started to kick the door, and I kept kicking the door," Natechia Moss recalled. "Finally, I got it ajar a little bit, and all of a sudden I saw her standing there and I grabbed her and said, 'Your house is on fire!'"
But, strangely, the neighbor turned back inside to get her cat and some jewelry. This is something that fire departments obviously don't recommend. But, luckily for everyone, she was unharmed.
Once the neighbor had come out of the house, 50 firefighters from the Melville Fire Department arrived at the scene to battle the blaze.
While Jovani has been hailed as a hero, he doesn't think he did much. "I'm not really a hero. I'm just being a good neighbor." And a good neighbor he was! Good on both of them for saving their neighbor. What a brave way to handle things!
