Zac Brown and Wife of 12 Years Announce Separation

Zac Brown and his wife of 12 years, Shelly, have announced their separation.

On Oct. 4, the couple released a joint statement to People magazine regarding their decision.

"We feel blessed to be on such an incredible journey in life and sometimes the journey begins to lead in different directions. It is with deep love and respect that we announce we are separating as a couple," the couple said in a joint statement.

The couple has five kids together: Alexander, Joni, Georgia, Lucy and Justice.

In their statement, the couple said that while the decision to separate was a difficult one, they will move forward with love and respect.

"We have led a whirlwind life together growing into a beautiful family with five amazing children and while life will be rearranging a bit, our love and commitment to our family will always be there," the couple continued. "This was a difficult decision, but we've done plenty of tough things together and this is our next venture — love, mutual respect, and care for each other are what we are moving forward with."

People notes that the couple first met at a New Year's Eve party where Brown was performing.

The couple asks for respect and privacy, requesting that folks focus their time, energy and love on their own family rather than commenting on theirs.

"We would like to ask that rather than commenting or spending any energy towards this, that you take this moment to send love to your family, in honor of ours."

The Zac Brown Band are currently working on a new album, the follow-up to 2017's Welcome Home.

The Zac Brown Band and pop artist Shawn Mendes recently teamed up for an episode of CMT Crossroads, which will air on Oct. 24 at 9 p.m. CT on CMT.
