According to a report by CBS News, the incident occurred on Monday evening at around 7 PM near Diversey Avenue and Rutland Street. The outlet explains that police received a call that a child under ten was hit by an ice cream truck. Per WXYZ Detroit, the victim is 6-year-old Mubarak Walid. Detroit Police took the ice cream truck driver into custody, but he has since been released. The driver reportedly stayed at the scene after hitting the young boy and is cooperating with police.

In a press interview, Captain Shannon Hampton says that the ice cream truck "hit a tender-age child and fatally wounded that child." When a reporter asked "Do you know if the child was supervised by parents or were the parents in the area?" Hampton responded, "We're not releasing that information at this time." She added, "The homicide fatal squad is investigating." Many details regarding the incident remain unclear. We don't know if the child was in the street at the time or what happened before the impact.

The Ice Cream Truck Driver Hit The Boy Without Even Realizing

Per a report by Click On Detroit, a relative told the outlet that children were playing outside when the driver of the ice cream truck "hit the boy without even realizing." There are also conflicting accounts concerning the boy's age, as Click On Detroit believes Walid is 4. Muklus Alshimry, a relative of Walid's father, said, "When he hit him, he doesn't know he hit a kid." He also suggests that the truck driver may have hit Walid a second time when he backed up. Following the incident, the Detroit Police urged parents to keep an eye on their children, especially as the weather improves.

Just last month, an 11-year-old girl from Northern Ireland died after stepping off her school bus in the town of Castledawson. She reportedly exited the bus, but a car hit her shortly after. Emergency services rushed her to a hospital in Belfast, but she died from her injuries.
