"I had a lung puncture," McAvoy said on the "Armchair Expert" podcast, hosted by Dax Shepard. "...They saw a shadow in my lung, so they wanted to biopsy it to see if it was cancer, which it wasn't, which was great."

Unfortunately for McAvoy, the biopsy is where things went awfully wrong.

"But that was botched, and I nearly died," he explained. "I was at home two days later, and my lungs just collapsed in bed one night. And I was on my own as well, so it was crazy."

Luckily, McAvoy was able to receive medical help. However, as a result of the collapsed lung, he found himself spending the next few weeks in a hospital.

"They were like, 'We're going to need to cut you open big style, go in with, like, dish soap basically and just clean you out, scoop it all out,'" he told Shepard.

To make matters worse, McAvoy was also under pressure to get his body in shape for an upcoming movie he was preparing for.

James McAvoy Was Getting Ready for the 2019 Movie 'Glass'

The movie McAvoy was preparing for was called Glass, which was the sequel to Split, a popular psychological thriller.

"Unlike 'Split,' I was 'The Beast' [for] most of the movie, and I was just outside in broad daylight as well," McAvoy explained. "So I was like, 'I'm really going to need to do the real thing. I'm going to need to go for it.' I remember saying to [M. Night Shyamalan], 'You're going to need to get me a trainer.'"

Luckily, McAvoy made a full recovery from his collapsed lung. That allowed him to ensure he was in the right physical condition for his role in the movie. However, the next time he goes into the hospital for a routine procedure, he could be forgiven for being overly nervous.
