McDonald's has long had a reputation as an unhealthy food source. When the fast-food chain added the Sausage McMuffin, McDouble and other items to its value menu, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine issued a consumer warning

The committee reported that sausage, chicken, cheeseburgers, and other fast food high in cholesterol and saturated fat can negatively impact consumers' health.

"Everyone is trying to stretch their food dollars in these uncertain economic times," says Emily Perryman, MS, RDN, nutrition education coordinator for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, "but if you value your health, you should avoid fast-food meals containing sausage, chicken, red meat, and other animal products, or you could pay the price by increasing your risk of costly health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers."

Texas resident Yvette Hinds had to find out the hard way.

NYC Tourist Hospitalized After Consuming McDonald's Meal

During her trip to New York City, Hinds ordered a Sausage McMuffin with Egg from a local McDonald's. The breakfast sandwich wound up being much more costly than its value menu price suggests.

Hinds claims that the McDonald's meal left her so seriously ill that she ultimately required multiple medical procedures and continues to suffer lasting health consequences.

In her lawsuit filed against McDonald's on May 26 in the Manhattan Supreme Court, Hinds alleges that the sandwich contained "injurious substances, contaminants, poisons, toxins, parasites, bacteria, germs and/or organisms."

After consuming the value menu item, Hinds claims that she became "violently ill and nauseated," and suffered "severe pains and distress throughout her body."

Additionally, she was rendered unable to perform routine house duties and was forced to miss time from work due to her illness.

The complaint accuses the defendants of "negligence, carelessness, and willful disregard."
