Morabia Siddhi Suresh, 33, of Fremont, California, was killed on June 8 along Interstate 75 northbound near the 62-mile marker in Rockcastle County.
Kentucky State Police Post 11 in London responded to reports of a crash involving a pedestrian shortly after the incident unfolded.
Woman Killed While Trying to Rescue Pet on Interstate
According to Kentucky State Police, Suresh had been involved in a separate collision while driving in rainy conditions.
Authorities say her pet escaped from the vehicle following the crash.
In an effort to retrieve the animal, Suresh entered the active lanes of the interstate.
Police said she was then struck by a 2026 Chevrolet Malibu driven by 25-year-old Caleb Valentine.
Suresh suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Rockcastle Regional Hospital for treatment.
Despite lifesaving efforts by medical personnel, she was later pronounced dead by the Rockcastle County Coroner's Office.
Investigators have stated that neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to have played a role in the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
Friends Remember Devoted Animal Lover
Authorities have launched an investigation into both the initial collision and the events that led to Suresh entering the roadway.
According to PEOPLE, Suresh was known as a devoted animal lover who regularly supported pet-related charities and rescue organizations.
In February 2025, she celebrated the birthday of her beloved dog, Penelope, affectionately known as Penny.
She donated to The Voice of Stray Dogs (VOSD), one of India's largest dog rescue organizations.
"Siddhi, a huge dog lover, absolutely adores Penny and calls her 'the happiest accident of her life,'" read a note from VOSD. "She cannot imagine life any other way."
At this time, authorities have not announced whether Valentine has been cited, arrested, or faces any charges related to the fatal collision.
Additional details are expected as investigators continue working to determine exactly how the tragic chain of events unfolded.
