Emergency crews rushed to the scene and found the woman unconscious and unresponsive inside the utility hole.

Paramedics transported her to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where doctors pronounced her dead.

Authorities confirmed the opening was a Con Edison utility manhole.

Police have not yet publicly identified the victim as authorities continue notifying family members.

"We are deeply saddened to confirm that a member of the public has died after falling into an open manhole," a spokesperson for Con Edison told the New York Post.

"We are actively investigating how this occurred. Our thoughts are with the individual's family, and safety remains our top priority."

Investigators are now working to determine how the incident occurred.

Separate Manhattan Crash Leaves Two Dead and Three Injured

Authorities say the investigation into the fatal fall remains ongoing.

The medical examiner will determine the woman's official cause of death.

Elsewhere in Manhattan, another deadly incident unfolded Friday evening when two men were killed and three others injured in a suspected drunk-driving crash.

Reports state that the driver slammed into several parked vehicles before mounting a curb and striking people seated outside a barbershop.

Police identified the driver as 61-year-old Elvin Suarez of Morningside Heights.

The crash killed two men aged 35 and 46, while three others, aged 36, 44, and 51, suffered critical injuries and remain in hospital.

"(I) ran outside and there was just chaos over there on the street," witness Matt Amsterdam told WABC. "I didn't know what happened immediately, but we knew it was an accident, I went over and I saw one person on the ground who I could tell immediately was struggling for life -- if he had any left."

Police said Suarez was taken into custody before being transported to hospital.

He now faces multiple charges, including manslaughter, vehicular assault, and driving while intoxicated.
