According to a press release issued by the Civil Police of Mato Grosso, Martins Pereira "coldly confessed" to killing the teenager and now faces the following charges: triple-qualified homicide, concealment of a corpse, and registering someone else's birth as her own.
As per police, the suspect and her husband arrived at the Santa Helena Maternity Hospital with a newborn baby on Thursday, March 13. They claimed that the baby was their own and that the Martins Pereira had given birth at home. While medical staff took care of the newborn, the woman initially refused treatment. Eventually, however, she agreed, and that's when doctors determined she was "not in the postpartum period."
Moreover, when Martins Pereira attempted to breastfeed the baby she was unable to, as her breasts did not produce any milk. Medical staff began suspecting that the woman was not the newborn's mother, and they contacted local police. Both Martins Pereira and her husband were transported to a police station.
Gruesome Discovery
Police would then arrive at the couple's home and find the body of Emilly Beatriz Azevedo Sena, who had been missing since Wednesday, March 12. The gruesome scene was described by police. Her body was found buried "in a shallow grave," with part of her leg visible.
"The victim's abdomen was open, indicating a situation of forced labor, in addition to showing signs of hanging, strangulation, and asphyxiation," the police wrote. Moreover, they found two plastic bags over her head and internet cables wrapped around the victim's neck, hands, and legs.
During police interrogation, Nataly Helen Martins Pereira confessed to the crime. She revealed that she had lured 16-year-old Emilly to her home by convincing her she had clothing donations for her. Her objective, as per police, was to keep the teenager's baby, claiming it as her own.
According to G1, Martins Pereira claimed she had committed the crime after suffering two miscarriages. Moreover, she reportedly simulated her pregnancy following her last miscarriage, which was kept secret from her family.
Suspects Arrested And Released
While police also interrogated Martin Pereria's husband, he was later released. Moreover, the suspect's brother and a friend were at the house where the body was found. They were also taken into custody. Similarly to the suspect's husband, they were also released. The three men were not charged as the elements of authorship were only related to Martins Pereira. She told police that she "planned and carried out the crime alone."
Emilly's mother, Ana Paula Meridiane, has been left heartbroken following her daughter's death. She told G1 that she was not only a daughter, but a friend, partner, and companion.
"She believed the wrong people, she was innocent because the woman deceived her with things she didn't even need," Ana Paula told the outlet. "Emilly didn't need those clothes, she had everything. I never imagined my daughter was running so much risk!"
Caio Fernando Alvares Albuquerque, head of the Specialized Homicide and Personal Protection Unit, addressed the incidental. He stated that the investigations are ongoing.
