Country music icon Willie Nelson has long been a passionate advocate for America's farmers. In 1985, he helped to spearhead the first Farm Aid concert to help the hard-working people who grow our crops. Along with John Mellencamp and Neil Young, Nelson got the ball rolling. Last year, Farm Aid commemorated its 40th anniversary. Now, once again, Willie Nelson is adamantly championing the cause of farmers nationwide. He wrote an emotional post on social media denouncing data centers as a blight on our precious landscape and a threat to the nation's farms and rural communities. He wants to protect his hometown of Abbott, Texas, and other towns just like it.

"I Can Still See Stars at Night"
Nelson is clearly fired up about this subject. The earnest words he wrote on X are as potent as any of the lyrics he has penned over his legendary, decades-spanning career. At 93, this beloved country music outlaw has more spunk than ever.
The "Always on My Mind" singer wrote, "I grew up in Abbott, and I still have a home there with farmed land where I can still see stars at night. And now our community, like many others, needs to fight against data centers invading our land. The last thing we need is a loud, water thieving, light polluting, data center anywhere near our town (or any others for that matter.)"
He Advocates for "Thoughtful Stewardship" of Our Resources and Way of Life
Willie Nelson went on to say that the land and the people who lovingly, tirelessly tend it are the backbone of America. In his opinion, we have to act fast to safeguard that land from those who would ravage it. He wrote in part, "The strength of rural America has never come from big industrial footprints. It comes from generations of people, open spaces, local businesses, and a connection to the land. All of America deserves thoughtful stewardship that doesn't steal farmland...and small family farmers' livelihoods, and not data centers that only destroy the environment around them...."
His Words Resonated
Nelson's urgent plea for restraint as far as the construction of data centers goes struck a chord. One commenter answered, "None of the jobs that rely on these data centers go to the people in these communities... Doesn't sit right with me."
Someone else noted, "Thank you, Willie. You are a national treasure."
He is fearless as an artist and as a citizen. This eloquent and timely post proves it.
