Detroit, after being hit by a flash flood due to a broken water pipe, has now frozen solid. The meters-deep water, sitting on the roads, has become a solid block.
The water pipe responsible was built around 100 years ago and was around 54 inches thick. When it burst, a whole area of the Detroit neighborhood quickly became flooded. Homes, already freezing due to the weather, were submerged. Water came pouring through doors and windows.
Many people were left without water or electricity in the cold. According to the report, around 400 homes were in the emergency flood zone. A significant number of these homes were left without power. As a result, people had to be evacuated through the torrents of water.
Mayor Mike Duggan reassured frozen Detroit residents affected by the flood. "If you don't have power, you don't have heat, don't have water, you do not have to stay in your home. We will get you into a good hotel room."
But, when the temperatures continued to fall, the water flooding the Detroit streets froze.
