A collapsed abandoned mineshaft caused a giant sinkhole that has taken a bite out of the New Jersey I-80 highway.

The mineshaft waited till just after Christmas to collapse, as the sinkhole opened up on December 26 at around 7:15 am according to NJDOT.
The Department of Transportation shared details of the sinkhole, stating that it was 40x40 feet and that it was due to the collapse of an abandoned mineshaft below the interstate. They shared no other details, although their crews are working around the clock to "design a fix."
They told motorists to expect delays, although the time frame is unclear. Considering how large the sinkhole is, and the cause, it could be a very long time till it gets sorted.
"It is too soon to estimate a specific time because of the extensive nature of the repairs and forecasted weather this weekend," NJDOT said in a statement.
As such, motorists who require the I-80 will need to rely on detours. Make sure to plan ahead with the detour information NJDOT has provided. Also make sure to regularly check the website for frequent updates.
The Sinkhole Miraculously Didn't Claim Any Lives
Thankfully, no one was injured due to the sinkhole. If it were any other day, many may have suffered or even died as a result. A Christmas miracle to be sure.
A major traffic jam was caused, however, as numerous lanes had to get shut down.
New Jersey is no stranger to sinkholes, so it's safe to say that the crews are likely experienced with such procedures.
Although this is a rather exceptionally large sinkhole, it won't be a swift fix. So dig in for the long haul and get used to the alternate routes. If you're a commuter who uses the I-80, then you may simply have to wake up earlier.
