Why Shania Twain Says She'll Never Get Plastic Surgery: 'Forget the Sag!'

Shania Twain feels like a woman, no matter what skin she's in. The 57-year-old country-pop icon recently appeared on Hoda Kotb's Making Space podcast, where she opened up about menopause, aging, and the pressure felt by women in the public eye to undergo plastic surgery.

"I've come to a point where, no I'm not gonna do it," Twain told Kotb of her vow never to go under the knife. "Maybe that was probably part of what pushed me to go, 'Okay, it's time to start loving yourself in your own skin,' because sure I've got lots of friends that have had very successful surgeries, but I've also seen others that aren't so successful."

In recent months, Twain has been increasingly vocal about body positivity and self-love. The singer posed topless for the first time ever for the cover of her single "Waking Up Dreaming" — a choice she described as a "leap of faith."

"I want to be more relaxed and comfortable in my own skin. It is what it is, and I can't change it unless I go under the knife or something. I mean you don't really know what you're gonna get anyway, right?"

This is something that a lot of famous people agree with, though there are some, like Reba McEntire, that support going under the knife and for whom it is speculated that had some plastic surgery done.

The "That Don't Impress Me Much" singer went on to state that getting "one thing pulled here and another one pulled there" is not her speed. These days, she's focused on changing a negative mindset, rather than staring at the mirror.

"It's my perception of things that has to change," said Twain. "It's the way I see things that has to change, instead of changing who I am and what I look like."

The Grammy winner wasn't always so comfortable in her own skin, however. Looking back on her youth, she regrets focusing so intently on her perceived imperfections.

"I realize that, wow, I was shy about wearing a bikini at the beach when I was younger, and I'm thinking, 'That was ridiculous. I gotta stop this nonsense and start wearing a bikini to the beach now, even though I'm not my 20-year-old self.' I just gotta get over that stuff."

For Twain, part of getting over self-doubt is accepting that the body changes with age. Another part? Acknowledging, and laughing at, the silliness of a youth-obsessed culture.

"I'm only gonna get more saggy," she joked. "Forget the sag!"
