Ryan Seacrest had a surprise for American Idol viewers and contestants last night.

Just as the host of the reality singing competition was about to announce which contestants would advance to the Top 12, he instead stunned everyone with an unparalleled twist.
"American Idol" Is Delaying the Top 14 Results
Last night's broadcast marked the season's first live American Idol episode. The theme, 'Songs of Faith Night,' featured contestants performing inspirational songs throughout the episode.
The show featured a group performance of the song "Jesus Is Love." Carrie Underwood performed "How Great Thou Art" with former contestants Filo Ebid, Canaan James Hill, and Kolbi Jordan.
Then Seacrest delivered the twist.
"To ensure complete accuracy with the numbers, I was literally just told we are not going to announce eliminations tonight," he said. "We will not be announcing the elimination tonight. First time it's ever happened. Believe me, I've been here every night. We want to make sure we get every vote counted."
The delay was necessary because there were over 10 million votes to count. Seacrest called the response "unprecedented," and the decision was made to postpone the results so counting could continue.
As a result, the Top 12 contestants will now be revealed at the beginning of next week's live show.
Even judges Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie were shocked by the decision. This could mean multiple contestants may go home next week, but for now, everyone must wait.
It's Already Been a Wild "American Idol" Season
A few weeks back, Underwood was booed by American Idol's Hollywood Week audience. The reaction was prompted by her advice to contestant Mor for performing an original song.
"In a room like this, for you to bring an original song with that incredible band sitting behind you twiddling their thumbs, I feel like it was a missed opportunity," she said.
We also reported that before the season even began, producers were "growing increasingly uneasy over backlash surrounding Carrie Underwood and her perceived political alignment, stemming from her performance of "America the Beautiful" at President Donald Trump's inauguration last year.
Despite the controversy, this season's debut delivered the highest ratings in four years. Given that votes are still being counted for this week's live episode, it seems that, behind the scenes, concerns may be overstated.
