Jillian Lauren, 52, was shot by officers during an April confrontation at her Eagle Rock home. She was later charged with attempted murder.

Now, in an unexpected development, the LAPD Police Commission has determined that the officers involved did not act in line with department policy.

The commission reviewed an internal report, conducted as part of standard procedure. It concluded that two officers and a sergeant deviated from protocol when they opened fire.

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell will now decide whether disciplinary action will be taken.

Authorities had initially accused Lauren of drawing a firearm and firing at officers, who were in the area searching for a suspect linked to a separate hit-and-run incident.

The situation quickly escalated, resulting in Lauren being shot and hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

"I was doing the best I knew to protect my family," Lauren said in an interview with Rolling Stone. "[The] impulse was self-defense."

"My world fell to pieces around me in a heartbeat. It's like, you spend your whole life just getting an entire deck of cards in order. And just take them and throw them up in the air one day, and I'm still waiting to see how they're gonna land."

Following the incident, Lauren was charged with assault and negligent discharge of a firearm. She pleaded not guilty to the felony charges in May.

"Officers saw Lauren standing in the backyard of her neighboring property with a handgun drawn, police said," LA Times' Alexandra Del Rosario wrote. "Police said she pointed the gun at officers, and they exchanged gunfire."

In September, a judge granted Lauren a mental health diversion, allowing her to avoid jail time.

Under the agreement, she must attend therapy and refrain from drugs and alcohol. In addition, she is prohibited from owning firearms. If she complies for two years, the charges will be dismissed.

In December, Lauren filed for divorce from Scott Shriner after 20 years of marriage, citing "irreconcilable differences."

She is seeking joint legal and physical custody of their two teenage sons, along with spousal support and coverage of legal fees.
