Nájylla Duenas Nascimento, 34, was reportedly shot and killed on Saturday, May 9.
This was following what local reports described as a violent argument between the newlyweds.
The incident unfolded in the DIC 4 neighborhood of Campinas, a city northwest of São Paulo.
Wedding Shooting Shocks Brazil After Newlywed's Death
According to Brazil's Civil Police, Daniel Barbosa Marinho, 55, became involved in a heated confrontation with his wife shortly after the wedding celebrations.
Marinho has reportedly worked as a member of the Municipal Guard since 1998.
Investigators allege that as tensions escalated, Marinho used his service weapon to shoot Nascimento inside the residence where the wedding reception took place.
Authorities further allege that he initially fled the scene before later returning and firing at her again after the first shots failed to kill her.
Emergency crews responded to the home, but Nascimento was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nascimento was the mother of three children from a previous relationship.
Reports state that family members safely removed the children from the residence before the fatal shooting unfolded.
Authorities Investigating Suspect on Femicide Allegations
Police say Marinho later contacted the Municipal Guard himself to report the crime.
Authorities detained him on suspicion of femicide before transferring him to the Second Women's Defense Department. He remains in pretrial detention.
Investigators seized shell casings, projectiles, ammunition, and the alleged weapon used during the shooting while processing the scene.
The Municipal Guard of Campinas later released a statement saying it "deeply regrets the incident" while reaffirming its commitment to combating violence against women.
A spokesperson told UOL that, "The corporation is fully cooperating with the Civil Police investigations and remains available to the authorities to provide all necessary clarifications."
According to CNN Brasil, the case has also sparked wider discussion. Specifically, around Brazilian marriage annulment laws following the bride's death hours after the ceremony.
"In Brazilian law, annulment recognizes the invalidity of the act , as if the ceremony had never legally taken place, returning those involved to the status of single individuals. Divorce, on the other hand, dissolves a valid marriage at any time," CNN Brasil's Beto Souza wrote.
Authorities continue investigating the case as further details are expected to emerge through court proceedings.
