Johnny Cash left an indelible mark on the soul of country music, in large part because he stayed true to himself.

In the video below, you’ll get a candid look at what kind of a guy Cash was like to be around when he was with his friends offstage. The clip is from Shakespeare Was a Big George Jones Fan: Cowboy Jack Clement’s Home Movies.

Clement, a legendary singer in his own right, was good pals with Cash and throughout the years, they captured some wonderful moments on camera.

In one scene, Cash and his buddies drive out to the Virginia countryside to visit the grave of A.P. Carter, who was Cash’s father-in-law (he’s also considered “The Father of Country Music”).

Cash pays his respects and then leans back on the grave and lights up a cigarette. “I never got to have a smoke with him,” Cash cooly says to the camera, offering Carter’s grave a drag.

In another video, Cash goofs around while wearing a crown and pig nose, firing off quips to the delight of whomever else was in the room.
