Watch Chris Stapleton, John Mayer Debut New Song in Nashville

Lately, Chris Stapleton has filled Willie Nelson's early '80s role as the tradition-grounded country star with enough pop cultural clout to pull off crossover duets. Just as Nelson cut hits with the likes of Ray Charles and Julio Iglesias, Stapleton rubs shoulders with with Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars and, more recently, John Mayer.

For an example of Stapleton's pop pliability and his ability to magic out songs on short notice, check out his new Mayer team-up titled "I Just Remembered That I Didn't Care."

During his on-stage banter before the song's live debut on Aug. 8 at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena, Mayer explained that the pair wrote the breakup song's smooth blend of Stapleton's bluesy grit and Mayer's pop finesse the prior day.

"I've done a lot of cool stuff before, but nothing quite like writing a song with the great Chris Stapleton on a Wednesday and playing it live on an arena stage on a Thursday," Mayer wrote the following day on Instagram. Thanks Chris for the idea to write a song to perform together, and for being such a creative powerhouse. The afterglow is bright."

Later in Mayer's set, Stapleton joined in on a version of "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" from Mayer's 2006 album Continuum.

"I Just Remembered That I Didn't Care" Lyrics:

This is my mind and you know it
You never came in here before I showed it to you
And now I see you walking through that door
With a dress that I've been waiting for
And I know what you're trying to do
And I know what you want me to say
Funny, I was thinking about you yesterday

Oh, I just remembered that I didn't care
Oh, I just remembered that I didn't care

I used to worship the ground you walked on
And you walked all over me
And you looked me in the eye and said goodbye
And you did it so casually
And I know what you're trying to do
'Cause I see who you're talking to
And you send your pretty little eyes my way

But oh, I just remembered that I didn't care
Oh, I just remembered that I didn't care
You can try, you can try
But I'm way to high to fight it anyway
Oh, I just remembered that I didn't care, I didn't care

And I don't want someone, who don't want someone
Who wants someone all the way
And I don't want someone, who don't want someone
Who don't want someone to ever get away

Oh, I just remembered that I didn't care
Oh, I just remembered that I didn't care
You can try, you can try
But I'm way to high to fight it anyway
Oh, I just remembered that I didn't care, I didn't care

Oh, I just remembered that I didn't care
Oh, I just remembered that I didn't care
