Economic uncertainty is sweeping across the US at present, with people realizing just how much the new tariffs are going to hurt their pockets. However, the cornerstone of US consumer capitalism, Walmart, has promised to keep its prices low despite new import taxes.

At present, Walmart imports 60% of its goods from mainland China. This could pose a serious problem for the retailer as Trump's massive 125% tariff on Chinese goods takes effect. A huge amount of the stock sold in Walmart will be affected. But, they are promising to keep their prices as low as ever and plan to 'weather the storm.'
Walmart CFO John David Rainey rallied their stocks by almost 10% with a rousing speech this week. "History tells us that when we lean into these periods of uncertainty, Walmart emerges on the other side with greater share and a stronger business," he said in a press release.
In the past, Walmart has shown remarkable power during turbulent times. Because of the sheer size of the company, they can take a quarter or two of losses and still stand firm. Their plan, it seems, is to be the last man standing when the dust settles.
Many smaller retailers will buckle and collapse under the new tariffs imposed by Trump. Walmart has said it expects this and will benefit from the smaller market, taking further dominance in the retail sector.
Walmart Taking One For The Team
As a company, Walmart will be taking a huge hit from these new tariffs. However, they're not planning on passing the cost onto the customers. Once their competitors have fallen under the increased costs, they will undoubtedly raise their prices, but only once they have secured their monopoly of the retail sector.
"While we don't know everything that is going to happen...We do know what our priorities are, and we know what our purpose is, and we'll be focused on keeping prices as low as we can," the CEO said in his press conference.
When every other option has gone bankrupt under the new tariffs, only Walmart will be left. Then, they can charge whatever they want for whatever quality they supply, and there won't be any other option.
