Walmart is making a major shakeup in the way that customers will be able to pay for the items they purchase.

In a release on Friday (August 21), the retail giant announced that consumers will now be able to check out using tap-to-pay. The new technology will be compatible with Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Previously, the tap-to-pay option was not available for customers. This relegated customers to keep either their physical debit card or cash handy. But with the introduction of tap-to-pay available at Walmart stores, customers will get the convenience of only needing to keep their mobile devices on their person. Which most people do, anyway.
Of course, consumers rejoiced after years of asking the retailer to offer the tap-to-pay option.
"It's about time. The fact all my local gas stations have Tap Pay but not Walmart is insanity," one user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
"Life saver. The amount of times I have stood at the terminal looking like an idiot," a second user chimed in.
Walmart Set to Introduce Apple Pay to Select Stores
In the release, Walmart said that the goal is to create a more convenient experience for all of their customers. It also called tap-to -pay another "great addition" to the payment options that they already offer.
"We want customers and members to have choice in how they pay. So they can check out in the way that works best for them," the retail giant wrote in a release on Friday.
Walmart also said that the addition of tap-to-pay gives consumers "another familiar and convenient way to pay at checkout using contactless payment methods."
"Whether picking up groceries, gifts or everyday essentials, they can check out using an eligible contactless card, phone, or smartwatch. Customers and members can also add their eligible Walmart, Sam's Club and OnePay cards to their digital wallets. Giving them another convenient way to use their cards," the statement adds.
The new payment method will be available in select Walmart and Sam's Club locations beginning on Monday (August 24). The plan is for the retail giants to have the service available in all of their locations by the end of 2026 and all of their fuel stations by the end of 2027.
