The University of Texas at Austin’s marching band gained the attention of more than just their usual fans. At the university’s football game on Sept. 4, the UT Longhorn band gave a nod to country legend Willie Nelson during halftime. They spelled out “Willie” on the field, and Nelson himself acknowledged their tribute to him.
Nelson posted a photo of the band in action on his Facebook page. “It was such an honor to see this during the UT vs Notre Dame game Sunday,” the singer shared in the Facebook post. “Thank you The University of Texas Longhorn Band.”
The UT Longhorn Band replied to Nelson’s kind message with a thank you note of their own on Facebook. “Always an honor to play one of our favorite artists at halftime,” they wrote on their account.
Their Saturday game was against Notre Dame. There were some 100,000 people packed into the Longhorn stadium to watch the game, and UT ended up pulling out a win in double overtime.
After a three-week break, Nelson is back on the road again. He’ll be kicking things back off with a series of shows in Ontario before heading to Boston on Sept. 12.
